Saint Colmcille
St Colmcille built a monastery on Lambay, and this monastery was attacked by the Vikings in 798. This was the first monastery in Ireland to be attacked. There are no remains of the monastery to be seen on Lambay, but at various stages throughout the years, buildings of a military nature were erected, and it is possible that the stones from the monastery were used for this purpose. Lambay became the property of Archbishop Comyn, and rents from Lambay were given to the nuns at Grace Dieu. The Archdiocese of Dublin owned Lambay for nearly 800 hundred years, but it was rented to a whole variety of tenants.
